Experiential Learning Activities

Site visits to specific community programs highlight the problems and successes of community action and describe how to make appropriate referrals. During the Newborn Nursery rotation residents visit community services. They fill out site evaluation forms and review community services at the end of the rotation with the advocacy consultant.
Resident Requirement: Make the site visits during the Newborn Nursery rotation and complete an evaluation for each visit
CHAMP Program Education

Resident Requirement: Complete the workbook and pass the posttest during the second OPD rotation
Syracuse Parent Article
A 500-word article on a health or safety issue demonstrates good written communication skills. Each year members of the Parents Advisory Committee evaluates the articles, and a cash prize for the best article is awarded at graduation. In addition, all articles are formatted to become a parent education handout for University Pediatric and Adolescent Center (UPAC).
Resident Requirement: Write an article during the second year OPD rotation
Pre-Grand Rounds Advocacy Presentation
A 15 minute Pre-Grand Rounds presentation demonstrates advocacy skills by explaining the prevalence of a problem in the local community, describing the community resources that address this problem, outlining any multicultural issues and explaining the role of the pediatrician as an advocate for this problem.
